Teen Read Week Survey

SmartGirl Survey Methodology

SmartGirl collects our anonymous survey data online at www.smartgirl.org. SmartGirl NEVER asks our survey respondents for their addresses or names, we ALWAYS respect their privacy. Because SmartGirl’s surveys are online, we can collect hundreds of responses in a very short time.

SmartGirl develops its surveys with our experienced knowledge of the types of questions the respondents will be the most excited about and most able to answer. We include both open- and close-ended questions on all our surveys. Once the surveys are posted online, anyone is welcome to respond to them. We ask the respondents for their age, gender, country, and zip code for demographic purposes.

Once we have closed the survey and collected all the survey responses in a custom database, we conduct several procedures to ensure the integrity of the results:

1. We check for duplicates. SmartGirl accepts only one completed survey from each respondent and deletes any duplicates.

2. We remove blank responses and pranks. Some responses only have one or two or no questions answered, others are obviously silly or obnoxious prank responses. These are all immediately deleted.

3. We search for valid respondents. The valid respondent pool changes based on the particular issue being surveyed. Once these valid respondents are determined, they are collected in a separate database, which is used for data analysis.

4. We ensure that all valid responses are from genuine. Our research staff members are experts in recognizing authentic voices. Through careful analysis of the responses to the open-ended questions, we can tell if an answer does not seem like it came from an appropriate respondent. We do not count any response as valid if we have any doubt that it is authentic.

It should also be noted that there is little incentive for girls, or anyone else, to take the survey dishonestly. There are not payoffs or prizes, except getting to voice an opinion. In this way, we avoid the focus-group pitfall of having people who attend solely for the money and will say anything to get it. All the respondents to SmartGirl surveys take them because they want to say what they think. Simple as that.

Through these careful methods, SmartGirl ensures that its survey respondents are indeed respondents who have each only taken the given survey once. Our data analysis and reports are always based on the most accurate and timely information.
