This chart shows how SmartGirls voted in the poll:

Results: should schools have uniforms? Yes: 17; No: 24

Was the prediction correct?

(a) Most SmartGirls think that schools should not have unforms.

The actual results were closer than the prediction, though! More SmartGirls thought schools should have uniforms than was predicted.

Some SmartGirls gave the following reasons for their vote:

Yes:

  • And no, really, because it's great to be able to wear what you want, but for obvious safety reasons, school uniforms are required.
  • Because people get singled out and judged by the clothes they wear. Also, it would make buying different outfits expensive if you wear designer clothing.
  • Because school uniforms easily identify that you're a student! =D
  • Because we have enough to worry about at school. We don't need to now worry about wearing the most pretty clothes and being over-competitive.
  • But only every once in a while. For example, our school gave us uniforms, but we only wore them when required.
  • Cause then nobody will be more popular than others =D
  • I always found it easier to just put on my uniform every morning than picking out an outfit and worrying what people would think of it.
  • I think it's more important in junior high and elementary school and some highschool to prevent gang activity.
  • Less of a chance of kids making fun of other kids and everyone would be equal in the way of the wardrobe. Plus, you can still add accessories to show your personality.
  • Less temptation for boys to lust
  • Smart
  • You're going to school. Think about it! Plus, I wouldn't know what to wear every day.

No:

  • A lot of people, especially teenagers, express themselves by the clothes they wear. Most kids already don't like school, so why make them hate it more by taking away the only thing they truly have that makes that person unique and special at first glance? It isn't fair to take away a student's individualism.
  • Because it snuffs out students' creative ability. I, for one, express myself with my clothes.
  • Because it's pointless. Why does everyone have to look the same? Isn't high school about everyone being themselves and being unique?
  • Because kids want to be able to express themselves by wearing whatever. You won't have to worry about washing them and people saying, "Ohh, you wore that yesterday." And on the weekend, your parents might not have money for you to buy regular clothes. You might have to wear your uniform because of how much it costs...
  • Because people should wear what they want to
  • Because people should be able to express themselves!
  • I hate school
  • I hate uniforms
  • Kids need to be able to express their personalities and creativity. Allowing them to pick their own clothes is a great way to do that.
  • Kids need to express themselves somehow.
  • Kids should be allowed to express their individuality without going too far, like belly button rings.
  • So you can dress how you want
  • So we can express ourselves.
  • Students should have freedom of expression through fashion.
  • They make students feel far too controlled. Self-expression is important.
  • You don't get to wear your new clothes, bright colors
  • You gotta express your individuality!
  • You should wear what you want

Discussion:

Does your school have uniforms? Why is it so important to have clothes express individuality? Are there any other ways to be an individual? If schools are afraid of bullies, are there better ways to protect students than to have them wear uniforms? If you could design a school uniform, what would you want it to look like?
