Life Issues Survey Results
Smart girls decide for themselves.™
Many of you had strong opinions about this survey! And the results were surprising: 61% of you were worried about getting a sexually transmitted disease but 77% of you thought you were adequately informed about the possibilities of contracting one. And although 76% of you thought your school was a nonviolent place, 49% of you said that there have been weapons brought to your school and that people are beaten up at your school. A whopping 47% of you also said that you understand how someone could get so mad that they would resort to mass violence against their school or community and 52% of you said you could imagine someone in your school doing this!
Take a look at what you girls had to say about violence, STDs, and masturbation:
SmartGirl asked: Do you think a person like you could get a sexually transmitted disease? Why or why not? If you have been in a situation where you were at risk for contracting a sexually transmitted disease, please explain the situation to us.
Yes, no one's immune to AIDS or anything like that. Anyone can get it, it's just stupid to think it won't happen to you in this day and age. Everyone has to be careful.age

Yes, I think I can get an STD. I am a human being just like everyone else. Engaging in sexually activity puts everyone at the risk of getting a disease.
-girl, 16 USA
I could never imaging anything like that happening to me. Someone catching a STD seems like something you read about in a magazine, I would never expect it to happen to me and I hope it wont because its would be a lot of stress
-girl, 15 England
No, because I am not having sex until I get married and before I have sex both of us are getting tested for diseases.

SmartGirl asked: In one recent survey, a respondent told us she prayed to God to help her get away with something illegal. Another respondent said she decided not to do illegal drugs because of her religion. Many people use God or their spirituality to guide them in different ways. Have you ever turned to God to help you make an important decision? If so, tell us about that decision and what led up to it; if not, tell us about how you handled a tough decision making point in your life.
I always turn to God in prayer to guide me to choose the right paths in life. I can't remember any one decision right now.
-girl, 13 USA
I pray and things like that but usually make my own decisions, but if something really big comes up I might turn to God.
-girl, 11 USA
No. I just made a list of pros and cons. If there were more pros than cons than I would it. If there were more cons than pros then I wouldn't do it. And if there was the same amount on both sides I'd do it anyway.

SmartGirl asked: Over the past couple of years, some communities that thought of themselves as peaceful and safe have become targets of school shootings, bomb threats and other outbursts of rage sometimes from teenagers. Is this a problem you worry about in your community? Please explain why or why not.
yeah, of course we worry. last year, when all the columbine things were happening, there was a hit list where several kids from our school were on it and people got very touchy. we also had a bomb scare, sort of, but not enough to send us home, so everyone was really freaked out. there was once an incident with a suitcase in the school cafeteria and strange men lurking around too.
-girl, 15 USA
No, our community is safe and we have all kinds of precautions at school like having to wear IDs at school and going through metal detectors at ball games.
-girl, 15 USA
I have thought about it, and I don't think that this could really happen in my school, but I guess the schools it happened in really didn't think so either. You never know.
-girl, 14 USA
No. My town is like nowhere else - people take care of each other. In my school we do all kinds of activities and have clubs promoting respect, diversity and acceptance. I suppose it's possible some very messed up individuals could go that far, but I would never expect it here. There's no real provocation for it.

SmartGirl asked: A former Surgeon General of the United States once suggested that teaching
teenagers to masturbate might limit the spread of AIDS, and she was fired.
Some religions prohibit sexually exciting oneself while alone. Meanwhile,
the USA allows stores to sell magazines and videos that appear to encourage
masturbation, and many people both male and female enjoy masturbating
alone. What is your view on masturbation? Would you ever discuss your
opinions on this topic openly with your parents or anyone who knew you?
Why or why not?
I don't think there is anything wrong with it, though I wouldn't talk about it with anyone else. It would be too embarrassing.
-girl, 14 USA
I don't have a problem with it, but I think it should be a private thing.
-girl, 15 Canada
I don't do it but I think that it is ok to do instead of going out and sleeping with a lot of guys and I wouldn't talk about it with anyone else because it would be my private life and no ones business but mine.
-girl, 15 USA
Thanks for telling us!
