In Greek mythology, Sagittarius is commonly associated with centaurs (a half-human, half-horse creature), and more specifically with Chiron, an important centaur who was known for his healing powers and respected for his teachings. Chiron sacrificed his life so that men could obtain fire, and this sacrifice won him a place in the sky. The bow that Chiron is aiming is pointed at Scorpio, the scorpion.
The Sagittarius constellation contains the closest known black hole to Earth.

Kizer (December 10, 1925) is an American poet from Seattle. The author
of Pulitzer Prize winning poetry, her poems often feature nature and
feminist themes. She was the first director of literary programs for
the National Endowment for the Arts. She was also Chancellor of the Academy
of American Poets, but quit in protest because she felt that the Academy
ought to have more women and minorities on its governing board.
