My Self: A Guide To Me
My
Self: A Guide to Me is part of the My Tween Lifestyle Collection,
which includes My Life, My Look, My Beauty, and My Self.
The author of this series is Marlene Wallach, the president of Wilhelmina
Kids and Teens Modeling Agency in New York City. She uses her experience
in the modeling industry to teach girls (aspiring models or not!) the
tools to deal with issues of self-esteem, stress, and relationships.
My Self: A Guide To Me begins with this statement: “Being a girl today is terrifying, wonderful, and wacky.” From there, the book is packed with interesting and helpful tips to boost self-esteem and body image, along with methods to deal with stress and friend issues.
The tips range from short and simple, “A bubblegum shade of pink actually has soothing powers and lowers blood pressure," to elaborate, such as "Be Kind to Yourself Day." Marlene emphasizes that simple things that can make the biggest difference, such as thinking positive. She recommends that you find things you like about yourself in the mirror instead of things to critique, and make sure you give yourself time to relax. If you're the active type who needs to stay moving or you get antsy, Marlene has a solution. She includes short descriptions of six different types of yoga methods – ranging from yoga for beginners to methods for advanced yoga enthusiasts so that you can work your way up.
Along with tips and suggestions like these, My Self includes personality quizzes, writing space to reflect, and lots of colorful pictures. The book is short. With only only 128 pages, almost every other page is just a picture! Even so, I felt that this book was a good introduction to enhancing your confidence and relationships. Whether or not you’re an aspiring model, the advice and suggestions offered in this book are worthwhile and empowering.

The book is good because of all of the tips and suggestions but the truth
is that girls are going to look at the pictures on the cover. This is
written for aspiring models and it's easy for "pretty girls" like
on the cover to feel good about themselves but not normal girls finding
flaws and comparing themselves to "prettier" girls.
