The Diamond of Darkhold by Jeanne DuPrau (by Ann, 14)

"A great ending to a great series."

Book Rating: **** four stars (incredible)
Book Subcategory: Young Adult

Briefly tell us what this book is about (without giving away the ending, of course!).

It has been several months since the citizens of Ember were led out of their city and into Sparks. Then comes winter. People are sick and dying, and food is scarce. When Doon Harrow comes across an old book with only eight pages left alluding to something that might be in Ember still, he and his best friend Lina Mayfleet decide to go back and find it. Problems arise, however, when Doon is captured by a family who starts inhabiting the city.

How does the title relate to the storyline?

The family, the Troggs, renamed the City of Ember Darkhold - and the "diamond" refers to something Doon and Lina find.

Is there something interesting that the author does to present the story?

No.

If you could rewrite the story, what would you change to make it better?

I would probably add a bit more drama, but other than that it great.

Why would you recommend (or not recommend) this book to a friend?

I would recommend it because: (1) it is the fourth book in the Ember series, and (2) it is a great way to end the series.

Why did you choose to read this particular book?

I love the Ember series and highly anticipated the fourth book.

Complete this sentence:

When I finished reading the last page of this book, I felt... Surprised, the book had a shocking ending I didn't expect.

What type of reader do you think this book is appropriate for?

This book is appropriate for about 9+ because it is actually meant for a younger audience, but teenagers would be just as interested because of the plot. Plus, those who enjoyed the first three won't be disappointed with this one.

Give at least one example of a memorable quote, moment, or theme from the book.

"It's called e-lec-tricity. Do you know what e-lec-tricity is?"

Would you ever read another book by this author?

Yes

In your overall opinion, this book is...

Definitely worth your time.
