Report on Do You Believe in Ghosts?

They're the subject of countless scary stories, and sometimes we hear them used to explain weird things that happen. But what do you think? Are ghosts real or were they made up to freak kids out around the campfire? We asked you to take this survey and let us know what you think! Well, 344 of you responded with your thoughts - 269 girls and 61 boys, mostly between the ages of 12 and 14. Let's take a look at what you said!

Only 75 of you said you don't believe in ghosts at all. The rest of you believe in ghosts at least a little bit.
Seventy-four of you said you have seen or heard a ghost before, while another 112 said you may have but weren't quite sure.
What was it like to see or hear a ghost? For some of you, it was a mysterious experience. "Well, my house is very old and I hear cracking on the floor and creaking footsteps up the stairs. I even made out a decent shadow in my hallway," wrote one SmartGirl. For others of you, it's been a very definite experience. "About a month after my uncle had died, I was carrying my laundry to my bedroom, and out of habit I looked into my parents room. As I walked by I saw my uncle standing there -mustache and all- but when I realized he was dead I took a step back to look in but he was gone. It was very weird," wrote another of you.

More than half of you believe it might be possible for some people to communicate with people who aren't alive anymore.
If it were possible that some people could do this, only 118 of you said you wouldn't be likely to visit one of these people and try it out.
If it were possible to learn to communicate with people who aren't alive anymore, only 85 of you said you wouldn't learn to do this.
For all except 137 of you, you've heard of at least one haunted house in your area (the kind where a ghost lives, not the kind made for Halloween).

For those of you who have visited a haunted house, what was it like? "There is a haunted house near where my uncle lives and we got to visit it. It was actually an abandoned house. It was a bit creepy because it was really cold and dark and there were so many rooms," wrote one SmartGirl. "There's a historical opera house that is supposedly haunted in my small town. A ghost called El Vira is suppose to have committed suicide after not making it as an actress, and now she haunts one certain seat and people say that they see the seat move and hear it squeak when no one is sitting in it. I however saw or heard no such thing," wrote another.
Among those SmartGirls who haven't visited a haunted house before, a little more than half said they'd be likely to go! More SmartGirls said they'd visit during the daytime, but 105 brave souls said they'd go at night.
Only 73 of you said, if strange things started happening at your house, that you wouldn't consider a ghost as an explanation.
All in all, we learned that most SmartGirls are at least a little bit interested in ghosts!
