Report on School Daze

Smart girls decide for themselves™.

Posted in September 2008, this survey asked you to tell us what you think about school as you prepared to return to your classrooms this fall. With the start of the new school year, we found out what was on your minds! Who were our 365 surveyors? We had 337 girls and 15 boys, most in the 12-16 year age range. You guys came from many different backgrounds and from all over the world. Now let's take a look at what we found out!
Quick Trends
  • The majority of you attend public schools, though small groups of you also attend private schools or are home-schooled.
  • Some of your parents are involved at your schools and some of your parents aren't - we couldn't really find a trend there.
  • Most of you want or have an after school job. Only 86 of you don't have one and don't want one!
  • Which extracurricular activities are you involved in?
    SmartGirls are very active!
  • Most of you feel adequately challenged by your classes. Only 8 said your classes are way too challenging.
  • The majority of you feel classes like gym, art and music are at least somewhat important to take.
  • School lunches are always interesting. A fair number of you (106) think your schools' lunches need to be healthier, made with local foods, and more affordable. A similar number of you (102) think your schools' lunches need to taste better!
  • Does fashion stress you out at school? We couldn't see a big trend here - some of you are stressed out by fashion fads at school, and some of you aren't.
  • The word that best describes how you feel about starting school again is...
You have many different feelings about starting school again.
  • How much do you think you'll enjoy school this year? Some of you think you'll enjoy school a little bit, while others think you'll enjoy school a lot. Only 18 of you said you won't enjoy school at all.
  • We learned that 87 of you are starting at a new school this fall. We hope starting there goes well!
  • SmartGirls do lots of things to prepare for the start of a new school year, but the most common preparations are going shopping and making sure you enjoy the rest of summer.
