Report on If Your Life Was Reality TV
Smart girls decide for themselves™.
To some it's a fine use of audiovisual resources, to others it's just a guilty pleasure. No matter what you think of reality television, we wanted to hear it! You took this survey to tell us what you'd be like on your own reality television show, who you want to see on reality TV, and whether or not this phenomenon is here to stay. Who weighed in? Lots of folks - 452, mostly girls and mostly between the ages of 11 and 15. You came from 45 different countries and all kinds of different backgrounds. Let's see what you told us!
Reality TV is all about the cameras and those cameras follow you everywhere! Where wouldn't you want the cameras going? You drew the line at your bedroom - you wouldn't want the cameras in there - and at shooting scenes right when you get up in the morning. No thanks! You want to hide your bed head. There are some things you wouldn't show yourself doing on TV, and top of the list is swearing. No curse words for you girls. Next in line was wearing a bathing suit. You believe people watching your show who you also know in real life would be surprised by what you really think about some people.

Some reality shows feature competitions. If your show had one, it would most likely be a singing competition, though a fair number of you said you'd also enjoy cooking or trivia competitions. If you had a sidekick in your show, almost all of you said it would be your best friend. Where would your show take place? Mostly around your school, your house and your hometown. That makes sense! We asked what your show's theme song would be, and we got tons of responses. From the James Bond theme song to ABBA's Dancing Queen, you had some awesome ideas. Some of you even said you'd write your own!
How honest do you think reality TV stars are? Most of you think they are somewhat honest, but probably not honest all the time. Your parents tend to see reality TV a little bit negatively - some of you said they think it's bad, while others said they think it's okay, but necessarily a great thing to have on. If you could choose one thing you like least about reality shows, it's the nudity. If you could create a new reality show, you'd like to see one about your school or the Jonas Brothers. Is reality TV just a fad? You guys are pretty evenly split. Some of you think it is, while some of you think it isn't.

| How often do you think that reality television is fake (planned ahead of time)? |
| Only a very small sliver of you believe reality TV is really reality. |
~ "Dancing with the Stars! I love that they combine people we see all the time on TV and on the big screen with dancing. It's hilarious when the guys have to pick up the girls and everyone goes tumbling to the floor in a heap!" ~ "Keeping Up With the Kardashians because it reveals Adriene Bailon's love life. She is such an inspiration and a Cheetah Girl who knows how to sing her heart out!!" ~ "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List because she is smart, funny and fearless." ~ "American Idol. Because though it's superficial, it's ten times better than most other reality TV shows. PLUS the audience gets to vote, and unlike other reality shows, you hear from the stars of AI once the season is over." ~ "The Real World. I know it's too good to be true but it's fun to watch." ~ "Big Brother because it's exciting seeing ordinary people that aren't celebrities in a house with lots of others. They argue and have to do ridiculous tasks." ~ "I like Survivor because it tests the limits and mental capacity of everyone involved. It is a great way to see how people now a days can live on just common sense. During this show, I am sometimes amazed by who actually knows how to do things (like start a fire, fish, gather food, etc...) better then other people I thought would do better. Also this show is always changing, one never knows what will happen next."
