Report on How Jealous Are You??

Smart girls decide for themselves™.

Go ahead and admit it: we all get jealous once in awhile! Or do you get jealous more often than that? We asked you to take our survey to tell us about how often you get jealous, what makes you jealous, and what you get jealous about! Just about 700 of you - 697, to be exact - rose to the challenge. We heard from 650 girls and 29 boys, plus 18 people who didn't specify a gender. You came from all over the world, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, and most of you said you're between the ages of 11 and 17. That's just a quick snapshot of our survey takers. Let's see what we learned from your responses!
Quick Trends
  • What do you envy your friends for? The number one response was their bodies/appearances. After that came their boyfriends/girlfriends, their tech stuff (cell phones, iPods, etc.) and their clothes.
  • When SmartGirls get jealous, you tend to handle it by not acting on your jealousy and just letting it go.
  • Friends bring out the most jealousy in you. You feel jealous around friends more than anyone else, with classmates and crushes coming in second and third.
  • What happens when someone gets jealous of YOU? A little less than half of you admitted you secretly like it, while another big group said you make a point of not showing off around them.
  • Crushes can certainly bring out a lot of jealousy in all of us. You said you get the most jealous when you see your crush hanging out or dancing with someone else.
  • The majority of you have had someone try to steal your friend. In about half those cases it worked, while in the other half, you proved too close for that. How have you handled these situations where someone tries to steal a friend or a crush? The majority of you didn't confront the friend/crush-stealer, but a lot of you said you wish you would have!
  • Only 25% of you said you never pretend to be happy for other people.
  • How much do you trust your friends?
Only 20 of you don't trust your friends at all.
  • Spending time with other people can certainly cause jealousy. You told us your friends tend to get jealous the most when you spend time with other friends or your special someone.
  • Do you get jealous when your friend spends time with other friends? Not really, we learned. Many of you said you are cool with the situation, or you're glad for your friend.
  • You told us that when you're jealous of a sibling or cousin, it's usually because they are allowed to do more things than you, or because they get more attention.
  • What sort of talents do you get jealous about? It looks like people with singing talent make you gals green with envy!
  • On a scale from 1 to 10, how jealous a person are you usually?
Here, 1 means "not jealous" and 10 means "very jealous."
Your Words: Give an example of a recent time when you felt really jealous...
~ "Recently, I had a major crush on this guy I really liked and he was going out with someone. I was so jealous that I would always follow them around so they didn't kiss or anything. I would also always talk about them, especially the girl. I always said mean things about her so I would feel better, which was wrong of me."
~ "My best friend and I are in the same math class and we're both fairly smart. We usually got about the same grades throught the year (between 85s-100s). But on the final she got a 93 and I got a 76. I was so jealous that she did that much better me and I'll never know why because we don't get to see the graded tests. The whole situation is really frustrating!"
~ "This really smart, beautiful, athletic, nice, funny girl made the dance team, making her seem even more perfect."
~ "My ex hugged my best friend in front of me and i still kinda like him. ]: "
~ "When my friend always talks about how she can go to the mall without her parents and she can go with friends or her boyfriend."
~ "When I heard this girl with a really great voice at theatre rehearsal."
~ "When I was in school my friend came to school in a mini skirt and she looked better than I would in a mini skirt because of her height!"
