Report on Say Cheese! SmartGirls on Photography
Smart girls decide for themselves™.
|
This survey, posted in July of 2008, asked you all sorts of questions about photography. Three hundred sixty-one shutterbugs answered our questions - mostly girls and mostly between the ages of 12 and 15. Where did you come from? Why, 41 different countries! Take a look at what you had to say about picture taking.
|
Getting your picture taken can be a touchy subject sometimes. Some people love it, and some people would rather not be caught on film. What about SmartGirls? Most of you either love getting your picture taken (135) or don't mind it (153), while 68 of you don't like it at all. Maybe your feelings on that are influenced by how photogenic you think you are? The majority of you said you're somewhat photogenic. We can't say whether SmartGirls would rather be in the picture or take the picture. It came out almost even: 178 to 176! You guys are big fans of the self-portrait! Two hundred nineteen of you take them either often or sometimes!
|
| In pictures, my smile is usually... |
|
| This one's pretty close, though slightly more of you say you give real smiles in pics. |
The majority of you take photos when you're hanging out with your friends - most of you indicated you do this either often or sometimes. Candid camera? Yup, that's what you prefer! One hundred ninety of you like candid shots, while 161 think posed shots are the best.

| Friends and family topped the list. |
Many of you have and use your own camera to take photos, while others said they use the family's or a friend's. Almost all of you prefer digital cameras to non-digital cameras or polaroid cameras! Lots of you use the Internet to share your pics with people, from posting them on your profiles to emailing them to friends. Some of you still make copies of your photos and give them out to the people you think will want them too! Though many of you have not had the opportunity to take a photography class, a lot of you would like to! Only 74 said you have no interest in that. Are there budding photogs in our midst? Absolutely! It looks like 181 of you would enjoy a career as a photographer.

~ "My favorite picture is taken in Ireland down by the sea in Shankill looking across Killiney Bay around dusk. You could see the flash against the gold rocks and the distant tiny lights shone from houses on the hills in the distance. All of it added up together is gorgeous." ~ "Me with curly hair, blowing a kiss and posing as a moviestar in front of a tree." ~ "I took a beautiful photo this week of a purple and green hot air balloon which came drifting low over the house, just managing to stay in the air as it floated away down the valley. The photo is of it further down the valley, low over the green trees, against the blue sky." ~ "It was right after a major storm. My 5 year old cousin was standing on some debree with her blanket and there was a beautiful sunset with a rainbow across it. So before she moved I took the picture." ~ "My friend was taking a drink of water and her mouth was so full her cheeks were bulging. I told her to look at me and snapped a picture when she did. It is so funny!" ~ "One of my favourite photos is when I was about 9 and it was Sunday morning. I had had a sleepover at my aunt and uncles house with 2 of my cousins and my sister. In the morning we all (and I mean all- 6 of us) piled into my aunts bed with our pj's and teddy's. We were so squished! When my dad came to pick us up, he took a picture which we have labled "Sunday Morning" and is hanging on the fridge, right next to one with my aunt and her parents and siblings from when she was a little girl." ~ "My favorite photo is one of my dog. He's in our big grassy backyard and his fur was long (in need of a trim), he's standing in the grass (which was also getting a little too long) and the wind is blowing against his fur, which is blowing in the wind and the grass is up high on his short little legs. iIt looks like my dog was modeling for the picture haha."
