Report Title:
Report on Teen Read Week
Created by ChickenDance on August 31, 2007

My hypothesis
If your parents read out loud to you when you were younger, you will enjoy reading more when you are older.

The predictor
Did your parents read to you when you were younger?

Statistical Measures

Mode: yes, all the time

The outcome
You like to read.

Statistical Measures

Median: 2-3 books per month.
Mode: 2-3 books per month.
Mean: 3.97, Std. Dev.: 1.83

Interpretation
4.15 had parents read to them all the time.
3.94 had parents not read to them at all.
3.83 had parents read sometimes.
3.51 didn't remember.
Number are close together.

Statistical Measures

F=1.42 p=0.23503

Each pair of values is compared below using the Scheffé test;
yes, all the time yes, sometimes p=0.056777
yes, all the time I don't remember. p=0.051769
yes, all the time not much or not at all p=0.83055
yes, sometimes I don't remember. p=0.61445
yes, sometimes not much or not at all p=0.97059
I don't remember. not much or not at all p=0.56945

Evaluation
The data did not support my hypothesis.

Summary of findings
I found that people who were read to by their parents and who were not read to by their parents like to read and don't like to read. It doesn't really matter.

Conclusion
Whether or not people like to read is not based upon whether they were read aloud to as children. I am not sure how else to test my hypothesis, as the outcome makes sense to me.
