Report on Teen Read Week 2005

Smart girls decide for themselves™.

What Are You Reading?
Everybody reads. The questions is how much are you reading and why? Are you reading because somebody told you that you had to, or are you reading because you enjoy it? This survey was created to look at Teen Reading Week and all of your reading habits, and try and get a closer look at what you are reading and why!
Who Took This Survey?
A total of 962 people elected to participate in this survey. There were 691 girls and 237 boys. 34 elected not to say what sex they were. Most of the survey takers were of European decent, but there were people of African, Asian, Latin American, Middle Eastern, Native American, Oceania/Pacific Islander and multi-racial descent too. Everyone had something to say about Teen Read Week and their reading habits.
Does your school library celebrate Teen Read Week?
As you can see, about one-third of your school libraries participated in Teen Read Week this year. About one-third did not participate, and one-third of you didn't even know if your library particpated.
How much do you agree with this statement? "Events like Teen Read Week have increased my interest in books and reading."
Teen Read Week
This graph shows that the people who took this survey do not seem to think that Teen Read Week increased their interest in reading too much. Only 90 of the people said that Teen Read Week increased their reading interest very much, but 327 people on the contrary said that it did not increase their interest in reading at all. A good portion of you were rather indifferent, saying that Teen Read Week either helped your interest in reading somewhat or not much.
About You Guys!
Although not very many of you who took the survey thought that Teen Read Week increased your interest in reading, that is not to say that you don't enjoy reading anyway. The majority of you (525) said you enjoy reading a lot, whereas only 64 of you don't enjoy it at all. A lot of you mentioned that you tend to read about things you are passionate about. Also, we seem to have some good students here. 685 of you said that you either had excellent or good grades in school. Great Job!!
How well do you agree with the following statement? "I read for the fun of it."
Quite the Readers!!!
As you can see, the majority of survey takers said they read for the fun of it. You can see this by noticing how much the agree and strongly agree sections take up of the pie chart. Only about 25% indicated that they don't read for fun.
I read because my parents encourage me to read.
Although some of you read because your parents encourage you to read, most of you make the choice to read on your own. The bar chart above shows that 288 people disagree with the statement that they read because their parents encourage them to read. This means that a lot of you are reading on your own. Great Job!!
Reading Level
We asked you to rate your reading level, and here's what you told us:
  • 535 said they considered themselves advanced readers
  • 324 said they considered themselves average readers
  • 31 said they considered themsleves below average readers
  • Reading and Friends
How well do you agree with this statement? "The people I hang out with like to read and talk about books."
Hmm...it looks like there isn't a huge trend on this graph looking at your friends' interest in books and reading. The majority of people decided to stay neutral. More people strongly disagreed than strongly agreed. Although you guys are reading a lot, it seems like books and reading might not be a huge topic with your friends.
    Is Reading Cool?
We asked you how well you agreed with the following statement:
"I don't like to read because it isn't cool."
  • 40 of you strongly agreed
  • 31 of you agreed
  • 115 of you were neutral
  • 233 of you disagreed
  • 515 of you strongly disagreed

It's good to see that most of you don't worry about whether reading is cool or not when you decide to pick up a book!
  • Encouragement
Who encourages you to read for fun by setting a good example or by telling you?

Most of you decided to put parents on this one, 512 of you to be exact. Teacher was the next most common response at 481. Friends was a close third at 305. There were also many other interesting influences such as librarians, media, grandparents, and even one of you said Oprah!!!
Which kinds of materials do you read the most often?
This bar graph shows that most of you read books. There are, however, plenty of other reading materials that you choose to read. Magazines, websites, and assigned material were also very popular choices for the people who chose to take this survey. Some of you also listen to audio books, and read comics and graphic novels, and textbooks.
Not including school assignments, how many books do you read?

More than 20 books per month! 555.72
This chart shows some interesting things about how much you read every month. About 13 percent of you responded you don't read at all - hopefully Teen Read Week encouraged you to grab something to read! However, 25 percent of you read 2 to 3 books a month and 30 percent of you read even more than that. Keep up the good work!
    Reading Topics!
What kinds of people do you like to read about?
This graph shows that we had very open-minded survey takers. The people you like to read about can range from musicians to celebrities, to people like yourself, and even animals.

You seem to also be extremely well rounded in which types of books you like to read. For example, you guys listed 39 different things you liked to read. The most popular read for our respondents was adventure. 495 people enjoyed reading adventure. Teen literature, mystery and humor were all favorites as well. There were also a lot of people who liked anything and everything. Keep on reading!
    Choosing a Book
How do you usually choose books to read?
As you can see there are many ways to choose books to read. You can go to the bookstore, which was the most poplular way for our respondents to find a good read. Others went to find books around the house or at the public library. There are many ways. Some other ways that weren't as popular were buying online, and even though sometimes you can get great deals, make sure you ask for your parents' permission first. Also, not very many of you asked your teachers for good books to read. But don't forget - sometimes teachers know really good books, so it might be worth an ask!
Where do you get your books?
    Childhood Reading
We asked, "Did somebody read outloud to you when you were little?" Here's what you told us:
  • 561 people said they were read to a lot
  • 246 said they were read to sometimes
  • 61 said they weren't read to much
  • 39 said they weren't read to at all
  • 55 said they didn't know if or how often they had been read to
  • Check out the data above and the pie chart below. The data above shows that most people who took the survey were read to outloud when they were younger. The pie chart below shows that most of the people who took the survey are not read to outloud anymore.
Does somebody read out loud to you now?
How often do you visit the school library?
This bar graph shows how often you visit your school library. Unfortunately, the most common response was never. Hopefully you're just getting plenty of books elswhere. The chart below asks how often you visit the public library. Unfortunately, you can see that never is the largest count again at 156 responses. Something else to note is that 139 of the respondents have no public library. If you have a public library, hopefully you are taking advantage of that. It's good to see that about 25 percent either visit the library once a month or twice a month. Keep up the reading!

The bar chart below is showing that most people have libraries in their community. 819 respondents said yes, and only 19 said no. However, in the chart above 139 people said there was no public library in their community. As you can see, there is some discrepancy there. Figuring out why that difference exists might be an interesting project for you to work on in the SmartCenter!
There are libraries in my community.
    Librarian?
We asked if your school has a librarian or library media specialist. Here's what you told us:
  • 714 of you said yes.
  • 58 of you said no.
  • 119 of you said you didn't know.

If your school has a librarian or library media specialist, make sure you are taking advantage of them and always asking questions.
  • My School Library
We asked if your school library has a lot of books and resources that interest you. Your responses:
  • 246 said your library has many very interesting things.
  • 378 said your library has some interesting things.
  • 315 said your library doesn't have much interesting stuff.
  • 89 said that your library doesn't have any interesting stuff.
  • 36 said your school doesn't have a library.

Most of you have at least something that interests you. If you do not, I would go back and ask that librarian that you have, and make sure. Most libraries have something for everyone.
  • My Public Library
Some libraries have librarians just for teens. Does yours?
  • 160 of you said your library does.
  • 301 of you said that your library doesn't.
  • 412 said you didn't know.
  • 13 said you don't have a public library.

There doesn't seem to be a large majority of people who have a librarian just for the teens in their community. That's okay - most of the librarians will be able to help you out, and their knowlege of books might impress you.
  • My public library has a room or space just for teens.
The pie chart above is representing whether or not the respondent's public library has a room or space just for teens. As you can see it was fairly even between yes and no, with yes having a few more responses.

The bar chart below is representing if the library has a set of resources just for teens. Most of the librarys seem to have a collection just for teens. Only a small portion (83) said yours does not.

A great majority of respondents for both questions answered that they did not know. However above most of the respondents said they had a librarian that could help. If you don't know what your library has to offer, always ask. Your librarians are there to help. They may have a wonderful set of resources for you.
My public library has a collection of books and resources just for teens.
We asked if your public library has lots of books and resources that interest you.
  • 398 said your library has a lot of books and resources that interest you.
  • 364 said your library has some books and resources that interest you.
  • 108 said your library doesn't have many books and resources that interest you.
  • 81 said your library doesn't have any books and resources that interest you.
  • 11 of you said that you don't have a public library.

It looks like most of you can find something that interests you in your public library. That's great!
  • We asked if your public library offers programs and events that interest you.
  • 255 said your library has a lot of programs and events that interest you.
  • 226 said your library has some programs and events that interest you.
  • 232 said your library doesn't have many programs and events that interest you.
  • 222 said your library doesn't have any programs and events that interest you.
  • 27 of you said that you don't have a public library.

These answers were almost exactly evenly spread. If your library doesn't have much or anything at all, ask them why they don't. Let them know what kinds of programs you might be interested in. You never know - they might start something new!
  • This final graph shows that most of you would read more if you knew of more good books to read. Try searching on the Internet, asking parents and asking librarians. There is a good book out there for everyone!!!
I would read more if I knew about more good books to read.
