"I hate my legs!
I hate my legs, because they're hairy. I know you're probably thinking I should get over it, but when you go to a school where all the girls' legs are smooth, you really feel like some ugly man beast. My mom doesn't think I need to get rid of my hair (she doesn't have to get rid of hers, because it's really short), and she thinks it looks fine. But we're not really close (I'm a daddy's girl) so it's hard to convey my concerns to her. So would you please help me?"

Have you thought about starting to remove the hair from your legs? If you feel comfortable and wish to start shaving, or using hair removal cream for example, talk to your parents about whether or not it is a good idea to start shaving your legs, and if you are ready to start. Listen to what they have to say and then try to find a compromise between what you and your parents believe you should do. |

No worries! Some people definitely have much more hair on their legs than others! Depending on a girl's ethnicity and the way that puberty is affecting her as an individual, some girls just have hairier legs. But try not to worry; it's completely natural! And many other girls are dealing with a very similar situation. |

What about talking to your dad for advice? If you're not as close with your mom, dads can definitely still have helpful thoughts on girls' issues. Maybe if you see how your dad feels on the subject this may help you better decide how you should handle the situation. Try not to exclude your mom, though. Even if you two are not as close, try listening to what she has to say also. With both viewpoints you might be able to find a common ground and feel more confident in how you should handle your situation. |

Talk to your girl friends and peers, and see how they deal with leg hair. Ask them if and how they shave or remove their hair? And if yes, when did they start? Talking with girls your age, or those who have already been through the beginning of being annoyed with hairy legs, will help you gain perspective on your situation. It may help you realize that so many other girls are in the same boat. Also, you may learn some helpful ways of dealing with your leg hair, and what you would like to do about it. |

If your mom does want you to shave your legs with a RAZOR, try a substitute. Try an electronic razor. That's what I do. It doesn't even hurt!
Tell your mom how you feel when you go to school and see that everyone besides yuo has smooth legs and tell her that its embarassing. Maybe she'll let you shave.
I used to have ugly, dark hair on my legs. Once I was eleven I asked my mom if I could start shaving my legs. She wanted me to, but she said she was just waiting for ME to be ready! So just be brave and ask if you can shave them!!
You're mom will understand I'm sure. Just tell your mom you need to talk to her... tell her about your problem... tell her that you are getting old enough to do things like shave. Maybe your mom doesn't have a lot of hair on her legs but maybe you do. PS: don't worry about is so much this same thing happened to me (except my mom shaves). Sometimes parents think that you need to follow their paths because they want you to be just like them. Just believe in yourself and never give up. I'm serious, it really works. Cat, 12
