"Field Hockey...

I'm thinking of joining the field hockey team for my school in the spring. I have never really played before, but my mom played it in high school. I also bought a book about the basics of field hockey. Are there any other ways to help train for field hockey?"

27% Try getting your mom to help you and practice with you before you join the field hockey team. If she played in high school she should have knowledge about the game and she will be able to give you tips and advice from her experiences. It could also be a fun to bond with your mom!
23% Go out and play field hockey. Practice by yourself or with other friends who are thinking about joining the team and get a feel for the game. Practice makes perfect! Make sure it is a game that you actually enjoy playing, and not just something you are doing because your mom did it.
3% It may be helpful to watch a field hockey game so that you can see how it is played first hand. Try finding a game in your area and go to see it or look for one on TV or online.
4% After reading the books that teach you the basics of field hockey, try looking online for more information so that you are aware of all the rules of the game before you begin to play.

  • I say definitely go ahead and JOIN it!! You will meet a ton of new friends and a sport will always keep you motivated and looking healthy too. If your worried that you may be too inexperienced to join, don't. You pick up a sport like hockey quickly and who knows, you might turn out brilliant at it. Your still very young so have plenty of time to learn and have loads of fun at the same time. Enjoy!!:)

  • Dear In the mood for a sport, I've always played sports, and my memory might be a little sketchy, but if I recall, there really is nothing like actually going out on the field and playing it. Watching and reading is absolutely nothing like holding the stick in your hand and hitting the ball. I play handball, soccer, badminton and love ice-skating, but the general principle is the same.

  • I just started playing field hockey this year (I am 12 too). All I can tell you is, it is a lot of running and whistle-blowing. Read up on all the types of fouling in field hockey (ex. obstruction, high stick) so you don't do these fouls. Also everyday, run down your street to get the hang of always moving. Definitely practice with your Mom and ask her to teach you all the tricks she knows. You have a big advantage with her! Hope I helped! Yea girls with kilts!
