"Motherly Love!

My mom is disabled, and can barely walk. Sometimes I hear people talking about her when we walk by. She has to ride in a scooter because she can't walk far at all. I try to ignore it, but it's really hard and it still gets to me. How can I deal with it?"

13% Talk to your mom about how you feel. She loves you very much and will listen to your feelings. She probably has feelings that she would like to share with you too! It may help to have an open conversation about the situation. Your mom is lucky to have a daughter who cares so much about her!
9% Find a way to express your feelings. It's important that you don't let your feelings bottle up inside, because you may actually start to get mad at your mom. Journal, paint, talk to friends...whatever it takes to let out your frustration, anger, and sadness. If you get it all out, you can truly celebrate the time you have with your mom!
4% It's totally normal to still feel uncomfortable about this situation. It may be difficult to ignore it, but that's really the best way to go!
30% Stick up for you and your mom! People make comments for many different reasons - some people do not understand what they see, other people are scared of anything that is different from what they already know, and some people are just plain mean. But all people need more information. If ignoring their comments doesn't work, then maybe you need to say something.

  • Go to that person and tell them that you would like for them to stop talking about your mom, because it hurts you a lot. I mean, do what you have to do!

  • Try to talk to your friends about the situation. Friends can and will always help you feel better when you're down. If you don't feel comfortable talking to another person about it, maybe you could talk to your pet and spend some time with it. My cat always helps me feel better.

  • I think that you should have a little chat with your mom and tell her how much you love and appreciate her, but also explain that sometimes you get upset when people make comments about her disability. Don't worry - she'll understand your feelings. If the comments are usually made at school or by one particular person or group and they don't stop, then you should ask them how they would feel if their Mom was disabled and people mocked her. They wouldn't like it either, would they? If this still continues, then speak to their parents or teacher about it, and ask them to take control of the situation because it is upsetting you. You shouldn't have to put up with these nasty remarks. I hope I have helped you, good luck! - Aimee-lee, 12
