"Lately my two best friends have been dressing and acting differently than they normally do. Instead of normal clothes, my friends wear tight shiny fabrics, skin-tight pants, or super short skirts so they can be like Britney or Christina. I know that's the trend now, and I am angry. I'm sure thousands of girls act just like my friends and idolize these pop stars. So, just about every issue of Seventeen and YM advertise the hair dye, the make-up, the bronzer, and even the clothing. If I see one more t-shirt with rhinestones that spell out "naughty" or the playboy bunny symbol, I think I'll puke. I don't dress like that, and I don't even really want to, but it's like everyone is doing it now, even my friends. I want to do something about this, but I don't know what. I feel like I'm drowning in a pool of Britneys. What should I do?"

7% Just because many girls are buying into these fads doesn't mean you have to. Tell your friends that they look like sluts and that you don't want to be around them until they stop dressing like that.
6% Britney, Christina, and all of the other women are entertainers. The way they dress doesn't affect the way other people dress. The styles might be short and tight, but they are cute and in fashion right now. Get some new clothes and get over it.
48% Stick to your own style; By dressing the way you want to dress and not the way others want you to dress, you encourage other girls to break the mold and do the same.
6% Write the magazines or the ad companies that put out commercials/ads you find upsetting. You could even write places like MTV, an article for your school newspaper, and websites to get your message across.

  • You can't control what your friends want to wear…but you are free to express your own opinion. So tell them how you feel but don't expect them to change for you if they don't want to. They are just your friends and they have their own right to do what they want.

  • I think you should stay the same as you are. I'm sure you have your own style and when your friends see this, maybe they'll think twice. Maybe they will think "well, she doesn't dress like everyone else, but she doesn't get ridiculed. Maybe we don't have to.

  • Tell your friends this is the exact reason that girls are treated like objects. Younger kids probaly look up to them. Dressing like that will make a whole generation of girls wearing skimpy outfits!!!!!!!!
