The significance of dreams has probably been debated since people first developed the ability to communicate. Despite this, there's still no agreement on why we dream. It's hard to believe that dreams have no meaning at all, though, especially when it's so much fun to try to figure out what they're trying to tell us. To help you interpret your dreams, we've developed a dictionary you can use to look up some of the images and feelings commonly found in these night time visions. Another good thing to try when interpreting dreams is just to trust your instincts! Keep in mind that this is for entertainment purposes and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Accident

Dreaming of an accident is a warning to pay attention to a certain situation in your real life before it gets out of control.

Achievement

To dream of an achievement denotes that you will be greatly satisfied with the outcome of a situation or project. The bigger the achievement, the greater the satisfaction.

Acne

Dreaming of having acne symbolizes self-esteem issues and your insecurities. You are not comfortable with yourself and feel out of place in certain situations.

Actor/Actress

To see an actor or actress in your dream represents your pursuit of pleasure. Your admiration of a particular celebrity may lead to a desire to have some of their physical or personality traits. Adoption

To dream that you or others were adopting a child indicates that you are taking on something new and different. Ask yourself what is missing in your life that would make you happy. To dream that you were adopted suggests that you are longing for the child within you.

Afraid

To dream that you were afraid to continue on in some situation signifies trouble in the home and failure in your school or professional life. To see others afraid in your dream signifies that one of your friends will be so wrapped up in his or her own problem that they will not be able to help you out with some favor.

Airplane

To see an airplane in your dream indicates that you will overcome your obstacles and rise above to a new level of prominence and status. You may experience a higher consciousness, newfound freedom and greater awareness. To dream that a plane crashes, on the other hand, suggests that you have set overly high and unrealistic goals for yourself.

Alcohol

To dream that you are drinking alcohol in excess signifies feelings of insecurity and regret. You may be worried that people will discover your true identity. If you dream of hiding your drinking from someone, especially from a parent, means you have been keeping a secret that is going to end up hurting you if you don't let it out.

Alien

To dream about an alien signifies a particular person or event that is extremely foreign and new to you. You feel that you are at a complete loss as to how to handle or control a person, circumstance, or situation.

Alley

To dream of an alley suggests that you feel limited, restricted, or confined from doing something that you want to do. You feel stuck and don't know how to escape.

Animals

Animals symbolize the untamed and uncivilized aspects of yourself. Apology

Suggests that you are trying to resolve some internal conflict or unsettled issue in your waking life. Consider who you are arguing with in the dream and what you are arguing about and what that might symbolize. How does he or she reflect some person or aspect of yourself in your waking life? Army

Dreaming of an overpowering force indicates that you feel you are on your own and against all others. You are outnumbered and feel pressured.

Arrested

Indicates issues of control and restraint. Some aspect of yourself may have been prevented from fully developing. Alternatively, it may represent feelings of guilt. Also see Jail.

Athlete

To dream you are an athlete suggests that you have pushed yourself to the limits. You have achieved something that you thought you could not do.

Attack

To dream that you're attacking someone indicates that your ill-mood and temper may cause harm to another. You are releasing some pent-up frustration and anger. You feel that you have been wronged. Such feelings may be easier and safer for you to express in your dream. To dream that you are being attacked by someone, on the other hand, signifies that questions have been raised about your character resulting in a need to defend yourself. You are feeling stressed, vulnerable and helpless. You may also be faced with difficult changes in your waking life. To dream that you are being attacked by an animal is a warning to be careful with those around you. Attic

Represents hidden memories or repressed thoughts that are being revealed. An attic also symbolizes your mind, spirituality, and your connection to the higher self.

Audience

If you dream of being in front of an audience, it means that the people around you are paying close attention to your actions. It could also symbolize your fears of having someone discover or reveal your private thoughts.

Baby

A baby signifies innocence, warmth and new beginnings. A love may be blooming for you in your near future. You will also make fun new friends. Babies may also symbolize something pure in your own inner nature. If you dream of a crying baby, part of yourself may feel deprived of attention and affection.

Babysitting

To dream of babysitting children represents your need to make stronger friendships based on real affection and values, instead of superficial things. If the baby you are taking care of is crying, you are lacking understanding from others. If you dream that someone is babysitting you, you are frustrated that others try to manage your life for you. Backpack

Balance Scale

Balcony

To dream that you were on a balcony refers to your desire to be seen and noticed. It may also mean that you are on your way up the social ladder. If the balcony collapsed or seemed dangerous, you may hear sad news about, or from, distant friends.

Bar

To dream that you are in a bar represents your desire to escape stressful situations occurring in your life and retreat to a peaceful or relaxing environment.

Bathroom

Bed/Bedroom

Betrayal

Bicycle

To dream that you are riding a bicycle signifies the need to balance work and pleasure in your life.

Birth

To dream of giving birth can represent the beginning of a new project or stage of life. If you dream that you are giving birth to anything non-human, you are holding back from expressing your inner creativity and "real" self because you fear that others will judge you or that they will not accept your ideals. Blood

Blood in a dream can have many meanings. To dream that you are bleeding represents feeling a loss of power. You may be suffering from exhaustion or feeling emotionally drained. It may also denote bitter confrontations between you and your friends. Your past actions may have come back to haunt you. Try to avoid any sort of controversy with friends or relatives.

Boat

A boat in your dream symbolizes how well you cope and express your emotions. If you mainly experience "smooth sailing," you're good at handling your feelings. It's also a lucky dream. If the waters are rough, however, you need to work on this aspect of yourself.

Book

Opening a new book means starting a new chapter in one's life. Dreaming of finding a book in an open area can represent being open to new ideas and religious feelings. Boy/Boyfriend

To dream of a boy who you are crushing on in real life is usually just a straightforward reflection of your feelings for him. If you dream that you're in love with a boy who you don't like in real life, your dream could be telling you that you are overlooking good qualities in that person or that you have a lot of love to give at this time and no good outlet.

Bridge

Bridges often signify travel and transitions. Dreaming of a bridge over water suggests that you could be conflicted in your emotions. If the bridge was unstable or collapsing, it could mean problems in a friendship or love relationship.

Burn

Signifies the disintegration of something, or a loss that is beyond your control. It can also involve an emotion like anger dissipating and coming to an end.

Bus

To dream of a bus means you've been going along with the crowd and need to start acting on your own initiative. If you missed your bus in the dream, you may feel that others are leaving you behind socially or emotionally. You are having difficulty achieving your personal goals. To dream that you are in a bus accident signifies that you will find yourself in an embarrassing situation.

Cage

To dream of a cage indicates the feeling of being restrained and restricted from something you desire. You have no way of getting out and feel helpless.

Calendar

A calendar on the wall suggests that you are well organized and prepared. If you see yourself writing or making marks on a calendar, it symbolizes that you are marking time until a certain event comes to pass. If someone in your dream gives you a calendar as a gift, you will have much disappointment in the week ahead. Camera

To see a camera in your dream means you are trying to live in the past, or that you don't have a clear picture of a current situation. If you dream about running out of film, you may not have the tools or experience to deal with a current situation on your own. Ask for help.

Car

To dream that you are driving a car symbolizes your ambition and your ability to navigate from one stage of your life to another. Consider how smooth or rough the car ride is - that suggests how easy or hard your path will be to your goals. Also consider whether you are driving the car or are merely a passenger because that indicates whether you take an active or passive role in your life. If you are a passenger, it can also mean your knowledge will earn you good fortune, especially if the car is expensive.

Castle

Signifies your hopes and dreams for the future. It is expressing the inner desires that you might not have even realized you had.

Cat

Cats represent power, freedom and the animal self, especially for females. To dream of being a cat means you will triumph in an upcoming conflict. If you don't like cats, or you have an unpleasant experience with them in your dream, you are uncomfortable in some way with the more feminine side of your personality. Also see Kitten.

Celebrity

Dreaming that you are a celebrity means your desires and wishes may be beyond your reach at the present moment. To dream that a friend or lover becomes a celebrity suggests your fear of losing the friendship and loyalty of this person. To see a celebrity in your dream, or even to be dating or making out with a famous person in your dream, represents your understanding about him or her and the feelings he/she generates in you. Something in your waking life has triggered these similar beliefs and feelings. It is not uncommon that a real-life obsession with a certain celebrity may carry over into your dream world. Celebrities are often seen as heroes and role models for certain qualities or the fame and acceptance we want to achieve ourselves. Dreaming about a cemetery symbolizes self-renewal and giving up old attitudes or habits.

Chase

Dreaming of being chased symbolizes a real fear of being pursued by someone or something. It may also have to do with unresolved circumstances, situations, or emotions that you cannot seem to escape from or avoid.

Cheetah

To see a cheetah in your dream means you are being too lazy and that you need to get moving and become more active in the pursuit of your goals.

Choking

To dream that you are choking on an object suggests that you may find it difficult to believe some advice, or accept what someone is telling you. If you are choking on food, then it may be an expression of your guilt about something. To dream that someone is choking you means you are suppressing your feelings; you have difficulties in showing your fear, anger, or love.

Christmas

Symbolizes family togetherness, reunions and celebration. It is also representative of new beginnings and fresh starts.

Church

Represents a need to be appreciated by those you love.

Cliff

Dreaming of a cliff represents a threat or a feeling of vulnerability. You are up against an event or something that you are afraid to tackle. Falling from the cliff symbolizes losing control of yourself or a particular situation. Also see Heights.

Clothes

To dream that your clothes are dirty and you are trying to clean them means you want to change something about your personality. If you dream of watching a competition, you may feel that others are passing you by in some way - socially or romantically - and you are just "sitting on the sidelines" of life. To dream of your own death is actually positive - it means renewal and letting go of an old stage of life. This is also a common dream when you are getting over an illness - and it's a good sign that you are getting better. However, if you dream that you are dying slowly, you need to drastically change your routine and reenergize your life. Demons

Represent negativity and distress. Seeing demons in dreams also forewarns of overindulgence. If you dream of being possessed by demons, you are feeling helpless about something.

Depression

Dreaming about feeling depressed indicates that you are having a hard time figuring out the root of your sadness. You may also be facing consequences for your actions.

Detention

Signifies guilt or shame about your actions. You need to learn to forgive yourself. Are you punishing yourself for something?

Diary

If you dream of writing in a diary, you should pay close attention to the other symbols in your dream because they contain an important key to your future happiness. To dream that someone is reading your diary, or to dream that your diary is stolen, indicates that you are keeping secrets. You have difficulties telling others how you really feel.

Dinner

To dream that you are eating dinner alone means that you will need to do some serious thinking about your goals and direction in life. Alternatively, it may represent independence or lack of social skills. To dream that you are eating dinner with others is positive, signifying your acceptance of others. It suggests that now is a time to reflect and share past experiences.

Dirty

If you dream of being in dirty or messy surroundings, it is a positive omen meaning that whatever is worrying you will soon come to an orderly conclusion.

Doctor

To dream of visiting a doctor at his office represents disagreements between members of a family. Dreams of talking to a doctor in a social setting (like a party) are very lucky, meaning you will have good health and prosperity. If you dream that you are engaged to marry a doctor, someone you know could be trying to deceive you. Dreaming that a doctor makes an incision in your flesh means you may be bothered by some malicious person or have bad luck in your finances.

Dog

Dream doors can have several meanings: An open door means a new opportunity while walking through a door means you will take it. A choice of many doorways represents a difficult decision you must make in real life. A locked door means someone is hiding things or is stopping you from doing something you want, especially if you were locked out of someplace. Drink

To dream that you are drinking water indicates spiritual refreshment. You will find fulfillment and peace by looking within yourself and into your past. Driving

To dream that you are driving a vehicle signifies your life's journey and your path in life. The dream is telling of how you are moving and navigating through life. If you are driving and cannot see the road ahead of you, then it indicates that you do not know where you are headed in life and what you really want to do with yourself. You are lacking direction and goals. Dreaming of driving a car in reverse suggests you have set unrealistic financial or career goals for yourself.

If you feed an elephant in your dream, you will elevate yourself in your community through your kindness. To dream of riding on the elephant signifies good news from afar, but to dream that you fell off while riding it suggests enemies are looking to harm you.

Elevator

Descending elevators in dreams are usually negative, suggesting repressed emotions or anxiety about losing social status. A rising elevator also represents anxiety, but signifies that the trouble is almost over. Dreams about being in an elevator crash are common and symbolize some basic fear in the dreamer's life.

Embarrassment

To dream of being embarrassed is a warning that one of your friends may be acting falsely. To observe others being embarrassed in your dream is a warning against repeating gossip.

Escalator

Dreams about escalators represent changes in your lifestyle or romantic status. Going down an escalator is a common metaphor for entering into deeper levels of awareness. Going up means you will succeed in getting where you want to go, but there will be challenges along the way.

Exam

If you dream of an exam, it means that you are being put on the spot to prove an ability, your loyalty, or truthfulness to someone else.

Excitement

Dreaming of being excited indicates there is something coming your way that will bring you happiness.

To dream about exercising is an omen of good luck if you enjoyed it. But if it was tiring or unpleasant, the dream is a warning to avoid forcing any issues - don't push or try to get an answer out of someone for a few weeks.

Eye/Eyes

To dream that your eyes are closed suggests your refusal to see the truth about something. This dream can also mean that you are avoiding intimacy. You may be expressing feelings of hurt, pain or sympathy. To injure your eyes, get something in them, or be otherwise worried about them is a warning that someone is trying to trick you. If the main feature of your dream was the beauty of the eyes, the meaning is that you can count on the sincere love of those who matter to you. To dream of having a black eye also symbolizes your refusal to see the truth about something. You may be experiencing emotional pain, possibly related to a romantic situation.

Falling

Falling dreams are very common and often happen when we've started something new, like a year of school or a job. Falling a long distance and landing safely in a dream means you should trust your instincts to safely lead you out of difficulty.

Family

If you dream about family, it may be a way for your mind to express feelings and concerns about your real family that you could not express in daily life. Some believe that this dream usually has nothing to do with your actual family members, but rather the male and female sides of your own personality or self. So in a dream, your father may represent your expressive and protective aspects, while your mother could stand for your receptive and nurturing side. If family members behave very differently in a dream than they do in real life, or if unexpected things happen when you are with your dream family, the dream is probably a way of releasing your anxiety about real life family issues.

Fat

To dream of being fat often means you are feeling guilty about having done something you shouldn't. If you dream of someone else getting fat, you may have done something towards them that you regret. Or, it could mean that you are jealous of the person in some way.

Fear

Dreaming about a fear of yours means that you are having anxiety about certain events in your life. You may not be as successful in a particular task as you had hoped.

Feet

To see your own feet in a dream symbolizes your foundation, stability and sense of understanding. You may need to be more practical and sensible, or it can mean you are ready for more independence and freedom in your life. If you dream that you are washing your feet, you will let others take advantage of you. If you dream that you have big feet, people admire you and find you attractive. Fighting

To dream of participating in a physical fight means that you will be threatened by someone about something related to your status or finances. If you saw others fighting in your dream, you are unwilling to admit your own problems and turmoil. You need to take more responsibility for solving your own problems in real life. Fire

Fire can represent passion and anger, and can also mean transition. If you dream of being caught in a fire, a transition will be difficult. If you dream of being warmed by a fire and the feeling in your dream is positive, it is a symbol of illumination, transformation and enlightenment. You are waking up to the positive powers within you. To dream of being burned by fire indicates that your temper is getting out of control. Some issue or situation is burning you up inside. To dream that a house is on fire signifies passion and loving companions.

Fireworks

Dreaming about fireworks means that you like to be the center of attention and are showing off to others. It also symbolizes enthusiasm and exhilaration.

Fish

Fish are lucky in dreams, representing spiritual growth and transformation. To see fish swimming in your dream signifies insights from your unconscious mind. To dream of catching a fish represents important insights about yourself and your life which have been brought to the surface. Floor

Represents your support system of friends and family. It may also represent the division between your unconscious and conscious mind. To see a polished, wooden floor in your dream indicates that you are fully aware of your unconscious feelings and thoughts, and you are keeping these suppressed. To see a slanted floor in your dream means that you are deviating too far from your original plans and goals. If you dream that the floor you are walking on is sticky, you may feel that you are being repressed or held back by people who think they are acting in your best interests.

Flying
