About Us

SmartGirl.org is an online community where girls can share their opinions, creativity, experiences, and goals. Here, girls can see what other girls are thinking and add their own thoughts to the mix. Visitors to the site are generally girls between the ages of 11-17. They come from many countries around the world.

Most of our content is written by girls for other girls. Girls submit their creative writing, write reviews, listen and provide guidance for other girls, take surveys, and engage in social science research using our own survey data.

By providing girls with an online community where they have ownership and control in a safe environment, we hope to attract more girls to computers and information technology and to help bridge the digital divide. In addition, we hope that by providing a space where girls can learn more about themselves, girls will be in a better position to make positive choices in their lives.

The website is currently run by the Women in Science & Engineering Program at the University of Michigan.
